EGU2020 Session “Ground Penetrating Radar: Technology, Methodology, Applications and Case Studies”

In the framework of EGU2020 (2020 European Geosciences Union General Assembly), to be held in Vienna, Austria, on 3-8 May 2020, Members of TU1208 GPR Association are organizing again a scientific session entitled “Ground Penetrating Radar: Technology, Methodology, Applications and Case Studies.”

This session aims at bringing together scientists, engineers, industrial delegates and end-users working in all Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) areas, ranging from fundamental electromagnetics to the numerous fields of applications. Topics of interest include: GPR instrumentation; GPR survey planning and data acquisition strategies; methods and tools for GPR data analysis and interpretation (including signal processing, electromagnetic modelling, imaging and inversion techniques); GPR applications and case studies; combined use of GPR and other geoscience instrumentation in all applications fields; education and outreach initiatives and methods. 

The session is well consolidated and successful, last year it included 30 contributions and attracted a wide audience during the conference.

The abstract submission deadline is 15 January 2020, 13:00 CET

Your abstract body should have 100–500 words. No subsequent submission of an extended paper is due, for this conference. Nonetheless, the opportunity to publish an extended version of the abstract as a special-issue paper on the new international journal Ground Penetrating Radar will be offered after the conference.

The Technical Achievement Award of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Society is given annually to recognize significant technical accomplishments in the field of electromagnetic compatibility. Prof. Dragan Poljak is the recipient of the 2019 edition of the award for his outstanding contributions to computational dosimetry for human exposure to electromagnetic fields.

The photo below shows Prof. Dragan Poljak while receiving his very well deserved award from Prof. Bruce Archambeault, the President of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Society, during the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility and Signal and Power Integrity.

Many congratulations to Dragan for this prestigious recognition! We are proud and honoured to have such an excellent scientist in our association!



Issue 1, Volume 2 of Ground Penetrating Radar

Have you already downloaded and read Issue 1, Volume 2 of Ground Penetrating Radar (March 2019)?

That issue includes the Editorial and Preface, four interesting papers, and the usual “News & Announcements” section – check everything out at: http://gpradar.eu/journal/

As of 2019, TU1208 GPR Association is a Crossref Member; therefore Ground Penetrating Radar papers are now registered on Crossref and this is a significant step forward for the journal. Moreover, the website of the journal has been updated and now every paper has a dedicated webpage.

Online Petition against Circular No. 4/2019 issued by the Directorate of Archeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Italy (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism)

Associazione Italiana del Georadar (an Italian association dedicated to the Ground Penetrating Radar technique, www.gpritalia.it, chaired by Raffaele Persico) has launched an online petition against Circular No. 4/2019, recently emitted by the Italian Directorate of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism).
Circular No. 4/2019 regulates the procedures that must be followed when requesting an authorization to carry out non-invasive investigations involving the Italian archaeological heritage. Associazione Italiana del Georadar believes that such procedures are not well thought, they include too many useless bureaucratic steps, and may take a very long time to complete, which is incompatible with the timing of most national and international calls for research project proposals. Moreover, Circular No. 4/2019 imposes restrictions and bans to the organization of Training Schools and university courses that include practical activities in Italian archaeological sites. It is therefore apparent that the petition against Circular No. 4/2019 is of high interest not only for Italian scientists, GPR experts, and students, but also for colleagues and students from other countries, if not for everyone, given that the archaeological heritage of Italy is world heritage.

The full text of Circular No 4/2019 and its translation to English can be downloaded, along with a series of comments written by the Management Board of Associazione Italiana del Georadar. SAGA COST ACTION

Dear all, as probably most of you already know, it is
starting a new cost action called SAGA (the Soil Science & Archaeo-Geophysics
Alliance: going beyond prospection), CA 17131. There is the first
meeting in Crete on March 4-6 and I am going. Within this cost action, I would
like to develop some studies on the positioning of high frequency GPR antennas
on vertical surfaces. If someone is interested in possible collaborations with
me on this topic please let me know: I am looking for interested people.

Reconstructing the Roman site “Aquis Querquennis” (Spain) from GPR, T-LiDAR and IRT data

Aquis Querquennis was a Roman camp located in Galicia (Bande, Spain), on
the banks of the Limia river.
It was occupied between the last quarter of the first century and the middle of
the second century. The first archaeological excavations were made in the
1920s and the overall settlement occupies three hectares. This open access paper (with acknowledgement to COST Action TU1208) presents a three-dimensional reconstruction
of the site, achieved by using GPR and T-LiDAR data, complemented with infrared thermography.

Use of GPR supported by mineralogical-geochemical methods for mapping unroofed cave sediments, in Slovenia

Ground penetrating radar equipped with a special unshielded 50 MHz Rough Terrain Antenna
(RTA) and a shielded 250 MHz antenna was recently used in Slovenia to investigate the capability of this
geophysical method for detecting cave sediments of unroofed caves. The GPR technique was combined with mineralogical methods and geomorphological mapping.

GPR assessment of a wooden floor in Sao Carlos Theater, Lisbon, Portugal

Training School on GPR held in Rome on 14-18 May 2018

The school was successfully attended by 25 Trainees from 10 Countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Spain and Ukraine); 62% Trainees were from Academia, 27% Trainees were from Industry, and 12% Trainees were Freelance Professionals. Three Trainees were Members of TU1208 GPR Association and received a Training School Grant (waiver of the registration fee). Thank you very much to all Trainees, for attending and enjoying the school!

Lectures were given by 15 Trainers from 6 Countries (Belgium, Croatia, Italy, Serbia, United Kingdom, United States), coming from Universities, Research Centres, Companies, and a Public Agency. Many thanks to all Trainers for coming to Rome and for their outstanding contribution to the school!

Thank you to “the Helpers” Loredana Matera, Santo Prontera and Alessio Ventura, for their tireless work!

We are grateful to the co-organizing and co-funding institutions: Sapienza University of Rome, University College London, and Associazione Italiana del Georadar. We are also grateful to Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc (GSSI) and Codevintec Italiana Srl for providing cutting-edge equipment and excellent technical support during the practical sessions. Finally, we are grateful to Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli and Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura for hosting our practical sessions.

Building on the experience of 15 Training Schools organized in the framework of COST Action TU1208, in 2013-2017, this was the first Training School organized by TU1208 GPR Association. We did a great job! Lectures were interesting and regularly attended by Trainees, practical sessions were useful and in amazing locations, everything worked smoothly and the feedback that we received from Trainees was definitely positive.

The school was awarded with the EU label for the European Year of Cultural Heritage:

TU1208 Open Database of Radargrams – IFSTTAR dataset

This invited paper, recently published by TU1208 Members on the open access journal ‘Remote Sensing’, presents a dataset of 67 GPR profiles recorded in a controlled environment (at the IFSTTAR geophysical test site) by using 3 commercial systems equipped with 14 antennas. The central frequencies of the antennas range from 200 MHz to 900 MHz. The dataset is the core part of the Open Database of Radargrams initiative of COST Action TU1208, which consists in organizing and making available for the scientific community a collection of reliable and interesting GPR responses to enable an effective benchmark for electromagnetic modelling methods, imaging and inversion techniques, and signal processing algorithms.
